Growing bamboo can be a very rewarding experience, provided you are willing to take the time needed to take care of it. And by that I mean mulching, fertilizing, and watering. Also periodically taking the time to cut out dead or dying canes, thinning when needed and legging it up(pruning lower branches) in order to make the canes more visible. Within 10 to 12 years you should see canes reach their maturity. Most people don't even know that bamboo will grow in this area(zone 6a and 6b), but there are many different species that will grow and thrive under these conditions. And when they see a grove of mature canes they are amazed. Not to mention that bamboo is used for more things by more people than any other plant in the world, and is the fastest growing woody plant on the earth.
Various species of Cold Hardy Bamboo can be purchased from either of our 2 Locations. Gabelmans Gardens has become one of the largest Bamboo nurseries in the Tri-state area.
