The greatest plant I ever grew.

Bamboo The greatest plant I ever grew.

6 years ago a co-worker and I went on a mission: we both wanted to try and grow some bamboo plants. So, we got on the internet and found multiple sites of bamboo nurseries. Much to our surprise we found some growing locally so we set up a visit at a local nusery hoping to buy some plants we both bought some bamboo. He got phyllostachys aereosulcata ‘’spectabilis”, and I bought some phyllostachys aereosulcata(yellow groove).  Although I”ve lost touch with him, I have since learned what a wonderful plant this is. This plant changed my life and is helping to change my career. Just to see how fast this plant grows is nothing less than spectacular. Within two to three months a shoot can grow at incredible speeds to its full height. This plant is the most widely used plant in the world. And it is used for more things than any other plant in the world. There are literally thousands of things to use bamboo canes for. To see a mature grove of bamboo is mindblowing. And I can”t wait until the day that mine are. To this day I currently grow 10 different species although two of them are not doing so good they are still alive barely. The rest of my boo is growing great. I do have some 23 ft tall canes of aereosulcata that are very nice and can”t wait to see the canes on these next year. Things I”ve made with bamboo so far: walking sticks, fishing poles, fishing bobbers, key chains, trellises, pipes, fountains, tomato stakes,  flutes and apple pickers. and that’’s just what I”ve done with it in the past 6 years. Did you know that you can eat bamboo shoots? yes, you can I hear they are quite tasty but I can”t get myself to cut off the shoots I don”t want to give up the canes. If I”m going to cut them down I am going to let them live out their full life first. I want the biggest canes I can get, that’’s what impresses me the most. No other plant on earth will do more for you and the environment than bamboo. Bamboo puts out more oxygen than the same size stand of trees. This plant is drought tolerant and excellent at controlling erosion. Bamboo hates standing water and will die if planted in it.  There are ways to kill this plant and let’’s hope for mother nature’’s and our sake that people don”t learn how to kill it.
