Fastest Growing Plant Bamboo

The Fastest growing plant I grow is Bamboo. Bamboo can create a privacy screen in just a year or two. Depending on how far you spread them apart. Usually the recommendation is 4-5 ft apart. But I have planted it right beside itself and created an instant privacy screen. It is just beautiful in its maturity when it has all of its leaves. Because it gets quite bushy and cannot be seen through. Now the fastest growing plant I grow is Phyllostachys Rubromarginata. It spreads far and wide it’s almost like a snake. It finds its way in every direction. It’s fairly quick to size up and then really gets moving. You must keep an eye on this one because it runs fast. Out of all my bamboo I believe this one has the most shoots each year. And its large leaves give it a fullness like no other bamboo. I really love this bamboo and I am counting the days until this great bamboo matures out. I expect it to get about 45-50 ft tall and 3 inches in diameter.

Fastest Growing Plant Hardiness

Fastest Growing Plant

Fastest Growing Plant

I grow many different bamboo that are hardy. Phyllostachys Rubromarginata is only hardy to -5 degrees F. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on earth.  But it really seems much hardier than that. It really handles the cold winter winds well. Hardly any leaf burn at all in the winter. Rubro has very smooth canes and they  are solid green in color. but usually fade to an olive-green color. I originally planted this bamboo about 6 years ago from a division i got in Florida at Beautiful Bamboo. Ralph and Sherry gave me a great deal and I’m very pleased to this day. It was a great addition to my bamboo gardens and I have this one as one of my favorite 5 bamboos. I  have some great deals on this the fastest growing plant I grow. Right below with the PayPal button you can get yours today. I will ship as soon as I get the order.

We’re still open for business even in the winter. Many different bamboo can be planted in the winter and still do fine. In fact I just planted my Semiarundinaria Fastuosa about a month ago. Along with my Robert Young bamboo. They both are doing fine and have put up new shoots already. That will give them the boost they need for the long cold winter.

Gabelmans Gardens Winter

Gabelmans Gardens Winter

Come spring like around the second week in March I will fertilize them and really get them going. I have to move some bamboo this next year. So I will have some great deals going on when I move them. I need to move about ten different species. They have worn out their welcome in the space they are in. Because they are out of room to grow and spread.

Gabelmans Gardens Winter Greenhouse

Gabelmans Gardens Winter

Gabelmans Gardens Winter

While the bamboo are dormant during the winter. I have garlic growing in the greenhouse. I think that’s all I’m going to try this winter and just get ready for next years crops. We use a lot of garlic cooking great meals for the family and fresh garlic makes it so much better. Plus, garlic is supposed to be good for you. So I’m growing it. It is growing well already and looks great so far. A shot of compost tea and some fresh soil and they are doing great. I can’t wait to harvest them and dry them out. I might share some if it does really well.

Gabelmans Gardens Winter Cuttings

This is also a good time to start some cuttings and get them going through the winter and give their roots time to get established. A good plant to do this with is Hydrangea. They are very easy to start from cuttings. This can be done in the winter time. Because not much energy is spent on producing leaves. It will mostly concentrate on its roots. Then in the spring BAM!  You’ve got a great looking plant ready to sell. This is a great way of making free money. Black Bamboo Trees

Black Bamboo Beauty

Black Bamboo

Black Bamboo

Black Bamboo(Phyllostachys Nigra) has the unique ability to change its color from green to black in a years time. Black bamboo is one of the most sought after bamboo on the market today. Which is why it is one of the most expensive. It’s still a little bit rare in my area. But I have a couple of nice clumps growing well. It is only hardy to 0 degrees f. and may struggle the first few years, so I protected mine for a few years. Now it really seems to be taking off. Which is what I want to see. There are other types of Black Bamboo as well such as Timor Black.  And other clumping black bamboo as well like Gigantochloa Atroviolacia. Black bamboo is the crown jewel of all bamboo.

Clumping Bamboo

Clumping Bamboo

Clumping Bamboo

Clumping bamboo differs from running bamboo, in the sense that it only spreads a few inches in a year.  A running bamboo can spread up to 10 ft.  a year. But in my climate clumping bamboo matures very slow and running very quickly. I’ve had clumpers in the ground for up to 5 years and are still barely 6 ft. tall. A runner would be at least 15 to 20 ft. tall in that amount of time. That’s about the only reason I don’t care much for the clumpers. My feelings may change after a few more years when I finally get to see my clumpers mature, but we’ll see.

Running Bamboo

Running Bamboo

Running Bamboo

A running bamboo is a truly amazing plant. The resilience is absolutely outstanding. I’ve had canes frozen to the ground that stood straight back up with no leaf loss and still as strong as ever. As you may or may not know bamboo gets it’s strength from growing for a few years up to five it’s at its maximum strength. A new cane or culm will break very easily and needs time to harden and gain strength.  That is why a bamboo looks pretty bare the first year of its life, because it only has one set of leaves. It would break with all that weight on it in the first year. The hardiness of some of the runners is unbelievable. -20 degrees f.  That’s pretty hardy I’d say. And every year they come back bigger and stronger than last years bamboo culms. It’s really cool to watch a running bamboo mature. Over the past 15 years I’ve had many different opportunities to do this growing 39 different species of bamboo. I love the runners the best as far as size goes nothing compares in my zone 6. Northern KY is a great place to live and grow bamboo. I push the envelope on what I can get away with growing bamboo that is for zone 7 but with the many bamboos surrounding the area it gets a lot of protection from those cold winter winds. We carry many different species of bamboo for more info call (859)635-0922 and ask for Jeff and also Check out my other blogs.  http://mybamboogrove.com/ or http://insidemygreenhouse.com/ or http://hardybamboo.org/phyllostachys-aureosulcata-aureocaulis/ or http://makemoneygardening.org/water-plants/ or http://sustainmyself.info/or http://mybamboogrove.net/ or http://gardeningmoney.net/about-me-gardener1/ or http://bamboonky.com/

Water Gardens The Beauty Within

Water Gardens Give Beauty

Water gardens

Water gardens

Water plants are absolutely essential to a water garden. They keep algae from growing. They provide shade and cover for your fish. They also add beauty when the water lilies bloom.  There’s nothing like seeing a big beautiful bloom on top of water. Plus your frogs will be basking in the sun on top of the lily leaves. It’s such a sight to see but look quick cause when they see you they will go right back in the water garden. Plus many fish attach their eggs to the bottom of the lily leaves making like a little nursery for your baby fish. Just don’t expect to see the baby fish in your water garden for at least a year or two. Because they will be hiding in the rocks until they get big enough that they will not be eaten. Because many fish will eat their young. Once they get to a certain size the adults will leave them alone. Water gardens in my yard have many different meanings. There are water gardens for beauty and water gardens for work. There are water gardens for storage and some are for breeding fish. One for winter storage(in the greenhouse). And even water gardens that really breed the frogs, although they all do this. Water gardens also draw many animals. Snails, frogs, raccoon, and skunk. You may even have the great blue heron visit your water gardens. He is an unwelcome visitor to your water gardens though. He will eat your fish.

Eco Friendly

When you have a water garden you have a complete ecosystem. You should do your part to give the fish and animals all they need. To create a great home for them to grow and thrive. When you make it easy for them they will make it easy on you.  When the winter comes be sure to not let your pond freeze over solid. Keep a hole in the ice for the harmful gases to escape letting fresh oxygen get into the water. This can be done by running a bubbler or a pump to keep the water circulating. Moving water will not freeze solid and keep your pond and fish healthy. You should also try to remove as much debris as possible to keep the harmful gases at a minimum. Fish that cannot breathe good oxygenated water will die shortly there after. Make your appointment today and shop from our extensive list of water plants, bamboo and perennials. (859)635-0922 Jeff.
